📅 May, 2014 ▶️ The Disko Bay including the breath-taking Ilulissat Icefjord alone would be a very good reason to visit Greenland. I was joined by Tim and we were just about to start hiking the Arctic Circle Trail, so checking out the icebergs was a no brainer for us. It is hard to comprehend the amount of ice floating around in Ilulissat. We also saw Eqi Glacier up close from a boat tour, witnessing huge icebergs calve into the ocean. One of my favourite trips for sure which ended up on my 30th Birthday surrounded by Orange Sunset Icebergs.

Another cool video, but I always feel a little sad seeing all those Icebergs melt (afaik that always happens at certain warmer months, just it's way faster and happening during a bigger period now). It was absolutely beautiful nevertheless, thanks!

Hey

the first time i saw a blog of yours i simply had to look at it because i was very curious what the infamous tower tak3r is doing besides being an awesome wc3 player. I didn't watch any of your videos completely, just skip through them.

I think one time i posted a reply. It was regarding a helicopter tour you did over a glacier somewhere in new zealand iirc. You said something like its sad to see those glaciers melt and that they wont exist in the not too distant future. That made me angry. Because this kind of behavior - a helicopter tour for the sake of entertainment - is a prime example of the short-sightedness and irresponsibility of mankind that is causing the disappearance of the glaciers.

So my anwser was probably very rude. Which i want to apologise for. I also want to apologize for drawing conclusions about you based on assumptions. I'm sorry about that.

In my eyes, the assumption that your travels serve the purpose of entertainment and are very harmful to the environment in relation to the whole of humanity seems understandable. I suspect you've certainly given this a lot more thought than I have. So I would be very grateful if you would tell me your view of things in this context: Do your trips serve the sole purpose of entertainment or do they also serve the purpose of science, for example. How do you travel between the different countries and continents, and can you represent this to the general public with a clear conscience?

Thank you, good luck and safe journies

Hi @jodljodl: Helicopter rides certainly dont help at all, but there are by far not the main reason. If you drive a car, go to Restaurants, buy clothes or anything else that requires world wide shipping from for example China will have a much bigger effect. Sadly I do not know you or your lifestyle, but I am pretty sure you are not 100% green yourself unless you are a gather / hunter living in the woods off the grid. (which would mean you couldnt post on TL either^^)

My trips do not serve the purpose of science. I avoid planes whenever I can and rarely take long distance flights as I usually try to get around via land using hitch hiking with cars that are already on the road.

Of course traveling is not beneficial for climate warming, but do you really think that everyone that loves traveling should stop doing it, just sit at home and watch TV? I think it would be much better to invest further into new green energy technologies (which I personally have a lot of my money invested btw) and find ways to make traveling less heavy on nature.

Dont really know what you want to get out of this?

Cheers,
Chris

you simply can't answer without attacking him yourself. Then bragging about how green you "are". GJ, totally worth following your "career"

A little more and you could become the new DSP

You def seem to be worse than him, he at least had a nice tone to it and I just wanted to understand the critism.

Traveling is something that you can never get completely out of our society, i did not brag about how Green I am and even agreed to what he said. Hopefully you will not follow my career because you are certainly someone who is better off far away from me.

Take care and enjoy your internet life my friend.

Cheers
Chris

Hey Chris
Thank you for your anwser. I appreciate it a lot.

To answer your question: I think first and foremost I wanted to satisfy my curiosity and check if my assumptions about you were justified. Besides, it seemed probable that I could learn something, especially if my assumptions were wrong.

I think it's great that you try to avoid planes and especially long distance flights as much as possible. And you're correct assuming I am not "100% green". However, I did not claim that, nor can I follow your implicit definition of "green". Likewise, I have not asked anyone and certainly not everyone to stop traveling.

Based on your videos, I assume you travel a lot relative to the average person. In this sense you represent a very small fraction of humanity. That's the main reason why I'm asking you about your travels and your attitude towards them. Because while I don't consider travel in general to be harmful, I do consider very frequent travel to be harmful.

When you say global trade is significantly more harmful to the environment than passenger air travel, I agree wholeheartedly. However, the important thing here is, that global trade and passenger air travel are (somewhat) meaningfully comparable in terms of their effect on the environment. In the case of your statement, everyday driving, eating and consuming global goods has a significantly stronger effect on the environment than a helicopter ride over a remote glacier in my free time, this comparability is no longer given in my eyes. Accordingly, I cannot agree with you in this respect.

Just imagine that every person would fly once over the remote glacier you visited instead of a car ride or a visit to a restaurant or a purchase of a T-shirt. (Please don't forget here that people have to get to New Zealand first).

I think and I hope this brings two things to your attention:
1. Why your reasoning above does not make sense.
2. Even though not all travel is environmentally damaging, there is travel (or perhaps certain aspects of travel) that is particularly damaging to the environment.

I don't want to drag you further into a discussion. Thus, I do not expect you to justify yourself in any way. You are welcome to do so, of course, if you want to. After I have established that we have different opinions in this context, I would already be very happy if I had made you think a little.

All the best
jodl

I probably felt too much personal attacked, sorry for that. You obviously just state your opinion without being too hostile, so lets just leave it like that So far I have done 2 helicopter rides in 10 years of traveling, so I personally don't really feel guilty for climate change and will probably do another one if I get an offer for a free seat and the helicopter would go on that tour without me as well.

Even though i would have appreciated a different answer regarding future helicopter trips, i still value your honesty.

I wish you still much fun and luck on your travels and otherwise Take care
