I think this is the end for me. I played roughly 7000games of dota over 6 years. More or less 4 games a day, everyday.
I don't have the willpower, nor the time, and more importantly, the hunger to become better.

I played my very first game of dota back in 2012. It was a new concept after years of playing warcraft 3 and starcraft 2. Refreshing somewhat. Not having to play the same early game over and over felt amazing. Plus it was a team game. Less stressful overall. And yet it became a chore. Having to play everyday, watch every tournament, to try to get to the top. And yet, I feel like I didn't do enough. What if I tried for real ? What if I left college to play 10hours a day ? It probably wouldn't have changed anything. Maybe a couple hundreds more mmr, but still so far from the top. I am left with regrets, feelings that I didn't try enough, that all the time i spent on that game was wasted. But that would've happened no matter what. The hunger that I've felt earlier is just gone.

go hard or go home

Think this was me around end of 2014 and burnt out on it. I still play the game a lot but don't have a schedule for games and just do them when I feel like it, a hobby. I think that is how to treat it for most people, do you enjoy your hobby or not?

When I hit a period of not enjoying Dota I do something else for a month or two. Then when I feel like it I come back and enjoy it again.

Im not sure if you want real feedback or not but if you do. Imo your problem wasnt not trying hard enough rather you were inefficient with your time. Regardless of what your definition of “top” as your goal was, watching every tournament or even a majority of tournaments was a waste of time. Tournament watching is entertainment. You arent getting any better by watching tournaments.

For example if your goal was Top 1, top 10, top 100, top X in MMR, using the same time to watch First person replays or even streams depending on your region would have given you much better insight.

Instead of playing 4 games everyday, doing drills for 2 games worth of time or getting a good coach (or even someone that you just think is good) to help you analyze your weaknesses and/or give you things to work on. No athlete has ever made it to the top just by playing pickup games at the park/gym/field everyday. Pubs are just pick up games with randoms.

Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Sounds incredibly try hard to me

Guess I'm over that kind of attitude towards gaming for quite while now - but then again... I'm probably pretty old compared to most people on here.

To me dota is still a lot of fun to casually play with friends. And additionally a way to keep up with friends from home. I moved to the UK from Germany a few years ago and playing a few evenings a week with old friends from home is a lot of fun.

Just stop seeing it as "life" and look at it as a hobby to relax after work (or uni/school/whatever)

Do you ever consider what else you have done with your life during that time?

Dont stress bro, the pros have dedicated their entire lives to this game , most for a decade or more.

Just enjoy the fact that you pushed yourself in an area of life you are passionate about.

Kudos on your honesty as well, not many people will openly admit when they aren't passionate about something they are quite good at.

Rather than worry about all the trophies you(and the other 6 million dota players trying the same thing) didnt get, try looking forward to the next journey in your life

If you don't enjoy what you are doing, then what you are aiming for will be filled with the negativity that came attaining it

I think the drive to be better when it came to dota stopped a couple of years ago. On the other hand it was never that strong for me, i always viewed dota as a game that many of my friends and neighbors played so i did as well.

Started playing this game around like 15 or more years ago(warcraft 3 dota) and i think i sticked with the game due to the combination of every game is unique, the insane amount of theory crafting and most importantly camaraderie playing with friends or strangers(that eventually becomes friends) due to this game.

So it was never about the competition for me and more about the friendship but nowadays i still play but not as much or i couldn't grind as much anymore. The stress of the game is no longer that bearable for me and i have so many more priorities and just interests which takes more or less time than dota.

Don't regret about the time you feel like you wasted tho. You still enjoyed it and contemplating about such thing just leaves bitter taste than anything else

Think about the day u started Dota dude... Did you start for the mmr or the random numbers or badges put against your profile coz of how you would play; or did you play it coz you liked the game?

Just keep this as a memory, n I am sure 7k games has given you a lot to ponder about and smile in the future at some random moment rather than just regrets.

Cheer up. Its just a video game after all..!
