couldn't find an answer on the internet after some searching so maybe someone here knows.
i had an LA fitness gym membership, I lost my credit card and got a new one, so I figured I'd just let it die cuz I don't go to the gym anymore. they keep calling me asking me to update my info.
i told them I'm not interested in doing so, but they said that they'll keep adding to my balance if I don't officially cancel my account. is this a thing?
can I just ignore them and be ok or should I actually take care of it?
not that it would take a ton of effort, but I don't want to go all the way to an LA fitness store just to cancel the membership if I don't absolutely have to. anyone have any idea?

Some gyms do automatically renew if you don't cancel.

It's probably easier to cancel it through the gym than going through your credit card company. Your old credit card info is still attached to your account, right?

There's probably a contractual statement in really small writing saying that they can keep charging you, so you probably can't ignore them. I would definitely formally cancel with them as soon as possible; the potential for a bigger headache if you ignore them and they still charge you isn't worth it.

yeah this. I'm sure they had you sign something when you signed up and there could be some clause in there that could fuck you.
Most places will just drop you if your card bounces though, that's pretty sketch and pretty bm for them to continue holding you liable instead of just canceling you out.

Most gyms require you to go in person to cancel it afaik, though that really shouldn't be a problem anyway. I mean how far away is your gym? 
I would probably just be safe and cancel it though.

If you entered into a contract with them and one of the details of the contract literature was that you would be charged on a rolling basis until you cancelled it, then it would be very prudent to cancel it. Go in and cancel it buddy. Or send a letter.
Losing your method of payment is not a valid method of cancelling a contract. Your credit card never had a contract with the gym, you had a contract with the gym.

Gyms are the sleaziest motherfuckers on the planet. Yes, they will keep trying to screw you over. Even after you officially cancel, many gyms will attempt to keep adding to your balance just to see if they can get away with it.
I'd try to take care of it, and after some time confirm it was actually shut down.
Honestly, just expect at every step that they're going to try to pull a fast one on you. Private gyms in the US are absolutely notorious for that kind of crap. Atm, you're making it even easier for them since losing the CC doesn't end all your obligations.

there isn't an la fitness close to my new place (I had LA fitness because my old apartment had one 5 minutes walking), i use 24 hour now (rarely)... ugh... I guess i'll go take care of it >_>

why wouldnt u just call and say, i want to cancel my gym membership after my current membership expires. i would not like to re-new. its like a 2 minute phone call isnt it??

Don't ignore it, go in and cancel it because it's likely they are charging you as we speak lol.

Because you can't. You have to go in person to sign paperwork, or sometimes gyms accept letters via certified mail. They are really picky to try and force some extra money out of people who don't like to jump through hoops. Even the big name gyms like Gold's do this.
