I figured I'd make this post to foster some discussion about MLG since the current thread that people are going to has a mod-note expressly forbidding such comments.

First up, I have no affiliation or relationship with MLG or any other related parties. I'm merely a community member and content consumer.

Now, a large portion of TL seems to have overtly hostile feelings to MLG. Primarily because "MLG dropped SC2". Which is not something that has been announced or confirmed. I'd be surprised if MLG never attempted to produce SC2 content ever again, although the community is doing it's absolute best to discourage MLG from trying. MLG columbus had *2* games at it (Dota 2 and CoD:Ghosts). Obviously it was a smaller (in terms of # of games), more focused event. The fact that MLG chose not to attempt to fight with Red Bull battlegrounds over SC2 viewers that weekend in no way means that MLG has given up on SC2.

Even if MLG *had* utterly discarded SC2 as a game (which again they haven't), who cares? Would you prefer they took the NASL route of simply ceasing to exist? Blizzard's WCS is slowly but surely pushing out other content creators and tournaments. Western Wolves's disbanding is ample proof of that. SC2 is following pretty closely in LoL's footsteps where you are either part of the Publisher-sponsored tournament circuit or you are simply not a professional. You can't expect MLG to beggar themselves trying to run unprofitable tournaments in the name of community good will can you? The idea that "SC2 made MLG big" is also a joke. Sure SC2 is what introduced TL to MLG, but that in no way means that a plethora of other games haven't contributed to MLG.

Oh yeah, Western Wolves. The WCS system literally killed their SC2 division, and rather than dropping just SC2 they opted to shut down as a team. Many many fans are asking "Why don't you keep going with your other divisions?". Isn't that exactly what MLG is doing? Why is the team heroic for what they did but the tournaments are criminal for what they are doing? What a joke.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Please note that you are free to voice your opinions on MLG in this thread. Bans and warnings in the other thread were purely due to the fact that that thread had nothing to do with MLG dropping SC2 and so the mod actions occurred for thread derailment in the face of a mod note requesting that it not happen. Since those posts would be considered "on topic" here I'm sure we can have a reasonable discussion

E: If you want, you can treat this as your "MLG Vent thread" but please follow site rules in that case lol.

Clearly everyone in the community who cares.

No, it's not. Western Wolves has had Fighting, FIFA, CoD 4, Dota 2, Halo, LoL, Racing and CS teams as well. The cause you describe (WCS) =/= the effect (WW closing their doors).

I'm gonna stop you right there and point out all the countless IEM's, Dreamhacks, Red Bull tournaments, GSTL, Proleague (to a lesser extent) that run largely independent of WCS and produce wildly popular content professionally.

Also, source on MLG being unprofitable?

Just.. wow. It really feels like you either haven't read what you wrote, or you haven't given any critical thought at all. Waste of a blog imo.

Oh I read the WW thread, and if you honestly believe that WCS is the reason behind a dozen divisions from different games closing and a team disbanding, well..

If their players were getting notable results it would have been a different story as well. WW was poorly managed and a shutdown inevitable. Teams come and go, it's been the natural order of things since SC2 came out.

The worst part of the MLG hate bandwagon is how people keep rewriting history to justify their anger. Most of it is just "Fuck MLG, only care about money, tournaments were horrible anyway".

MLG probably did the most to grow expectations for the tournament scenes, and set standards. Open brackets, Koreans at foreign tournaments, and big stories that came from the tournaments. MLG Columbus, Orlando and Providence 2011 had some of the biggest moments in SC2 history, and MLG Winter 2013 is still one of the best of this year.

Yeah, there were issues, like extended series, but MLG still did a lot to push the bar and (probably) operated at a loss from the beginning. Plus they were the only tournament that paid players the moment they got placed...

I did enjoy MLG when I attended them, but oddly enough being there in person after the event ending I couldn't even remember the games or if the games were not entirely good to me. I always thought games at MLG was so so compared to other leagues/tournaments (remember that's just my opinion.) It was really for the experience of being there for me. MLG was a nice outlet for new blood for the game with the open bracket.
