im starting to get freaked out by this movie. it's christmas night here in NY, and i had a nice family get together with a big dinner, presents, and all that goodness. family's all asleep by now, but i'm not feeling tired, so why not watch a movie?
and man did i pick myself a movie to watch...

Audition is a film by the well-known japanese horror director takashi miike. it's supposed to be pretty hardcore and extreme, and i thought why not. i enjoyed miike's contribution to Three Extremes, "Box." let's go ahead and watch audition, right?
to be honest, i've read through the plot summary on wikipedia before i started watching the film. damn, that's some messed up stuff. still, it didn't keep me from wanting to see it for some reason.
and here i am now. i'm a little less than halfway through the film, and the creepiness is starting to ramp up. first scary scene for me was when Asami was shown sitting silently on the floor of a messy room, with a phone in front of her. she's waiting for Aoyama's call. also present is a large white sack. first time viewers would probably not notice this, but having read the plot summary, i was pretty shocked to see it so early on. it's the anticipation and the build-up that's really disturbing.
second scary scene was in aoyama's dream. his late wife is standing in a field, next to a big tree, looking right at the viewer (supposed to be aoyama's perspective. then, she recedes behind the tree. doesn't sound scary at all when it's written, but this seen gave me some chills. it's almost as if it's signaling the terror that asami is about to cause.
third scene made me jump. it's again in Asami's room, and it looks like she's STILL sitting on the floor, motionless, waiting for the phone to ring. it must have been a day or two. the phone rings several times, and the camera cuts to the lower potion of asami's face, and we see her grin. camera switches back to the room, where the phone continues to ring. suddenly, we hear a gruesome animal-like sound as the big white sack rolls over, like some animal in it just woke up and is struggling to free itself. fuck, if you've seen the movie, you know what i'm talking about when i say that this scene freaked me right the fuck out.
anyways i'm gonna continue watching the movie, and post any more thoughts i have. feel free to discuss the movie and spoilers and everything.

they just finished dinner and took a taxi back to her place, and i'm paused right at the shot where we are back at her place with the phone and the sack. fuckkkkkkkkkkkk
edit - no, i've seen chakushin ari, box, and imprint. maybe another that i can't think of right now.

Oh god I've read countless horror movie summaries but have been too afraid to watch most haha, the way you describe that in more graphic detail is T____T though good luck. I'm like the most easily scared person ever--I'll read a horror movie summary and be scared for days on end haha.

If you are interested in Miike flicks, I would recommend his contribution to the "Masters of Horror" series. It is a short flick (60min) called "Imprint". "Shock" factor is much worse than the one in "Audition".

Imprint is the only movie I've ever watched where someone I was watching it with literally fainted. He was heading outside to get some fresh air and he looked back at the tv when she was + Show Spoiler +hanging upside down from one leg and peeing on herself

i'd have to say, i've seen imprint and i thought audition was much worse.

kept me on the edge of my seat for most of it, i thought. i think because i was really drawn into the story, rather than having the mindset of sitting and waiting for the shocks/horrors.

Uhm, I found that scene hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing for about ten minutes.
