For those expecting more tv shows like I said last week, you've been duped. I have something else to write:
Over the years I've taken about 20 different math classes, everything from Rings and Fields to Probability Theory. The 21st math I took has turned out to be the most interesting though. Not for its material but for HOW it was taught. The teacher I have spends most of the lecture getting us to participate. He'll start off a topic with some general information and move onto an example or a theorem or whatever. Somewhere along the way he stops and starts asking us questions. He knows all our names and he makes sure to ask each of us at least three times a class about what he's written, sometimes sneaking in mistakes to keep us out of cruise control. Most times he just gets us to figure our own way through what he's written. Unfortunately at the school I go to, this is a one of a kind teacher.
The first couple days you could see everyone's frustration. It's 10:00am, we're all just out of the shower, half dead zombie autopilots all of us. He just laughs and says too bad.
I remember when he first asked me about something. I just said yes to what I thought he wanted me to agree with and he says well okay, why? And how about the next step? I'm a zombie myself, my mind is a complete blank. I don't know what the hell he's talking about, math is fucked up on a good day. So he waits about 10 seconds and then starts me off and eventually I learned something. So now everyone's paying attention in class, maybe out of fear but it's certainly working on some level.
Turns out when I have no choice but to pay attention, my mind doesn't drift off to what's going on outside the window. THIS is how I want to learn. How about you?
