The OSL Finals, Flash vs Effort. This was my glorious introduction to the professional Brood War scene (yeah, it was late, whatever), and I painstakingly read every word of this preview and the linked posts. I found it completely enthralling (TL has good writers ^.^): the way these players were likened to gods or scholars of war, the references to the tragic match fixing scandal that I've only heard about but never fully grasped the implications of, and the endless analysis of maps and matchups that I didn't pretend to understand but hung onto every word. It was the best introduction anyone could have to esports, so I thank you, Team Liquid. It's literally my favorite thread ever (it's in my favorites, please don't ever delete it)!
Perfect setup: Flash--the invincible Terran, half machine--and Effort, a down on his luck Zerg fighting hard to stay alive (that's how I read into the hype, at least; little did I know he had surpassed the "dragons"); and, most importantly, how their legacies would either be solidified or lost to the winds with this one fateful match.
And the HYPE VIDEOS, oh my lord, how amazing:
Perfect blend of humor and drama.
Unfortunately I couldn't watch the matches live, but thanks to NukeTheStars I was able to watch them later (with English casting, no less), and afterwards I felt like I had witnessed a miracle. EffOrt giving the GG play to Flash after being down 2-0? I still remember Nuke's cast after they showed EffOrt in the booth: "He's down 2-0 to FLASH and he's SMILING." I was left with one impression: "Wow, that was incredible." The feeling stayed with me for days. I had always watched WC3 professionally but not even Grubby vs Moon had left me with that awe, that pure wonder.
To put this into full perspective, even HuK beating Korea last weekend didn't bring about the same level of excitement; close, but not quite.
A few days later I went to TL to look at the comments, certain I'd find similar thoughts--instead I found more "mehs" than "woahs," and that boggles my mind. Maybe it was the fact that it was my first OSL? That I was a newbie? I don't care: it was freaking awesome.
So now my question is: what's happening in the BW scene? Last I heard Flash was taking a break because of carpal tunnel, but that was last year. Who's the new hero? The new underdog? Is the OSL even happening? (Please don't bash me for that question, I have no idea how the OSL/MSL works or when they occur).
I guess this blog was parts thank you TL, thank you NukeTheStars, thank Starcraft, and please-tell-me-what's-happening-right-now.
And that picture of Flash and Effort in front of the airplane with the map pool below them and their names above them? Saved. <3
