Right, so I was trying to play and livestream today, and everything wasnt going right. In my first game a 4v4, my computer took so long to load, I couldnt believe it!! (say 3x's as long as the rest of the people) I was the last one to finish loading and when the game started, the framerate was so choppy - It was very difficult to do any split, or even start my first SCV. So putting up with it and writing it off to my stream, I closed the stream broadcasting software, and my open internet explorer window, (which just had team liquid on it cause i had turned on my stream) and tried to resume playing.

I was in the middle of walling off a shared base (last supply depot was half completed), when one of my partners (and only friend in the game that wasnt a random person) wanted out of the base, with her lings (11 pool). So she rage quit, after her lings were killed *due to my delaying them (i'm such a newb some days *sigh*) and after a greuling 30 minute game of 3v4, during which i was spammed with "your computer is slowing down the game", rude remarks from players and extremely choppy frame rate, my team was finally overwhelmed despite a considerable dent that was put into two of the players bases. I am not mad about the loss, I could care less about my record and if she is reading this, I'm sorry I ruined your game plan. You're a great friend and I look forward to more games with you :o)

So when I got back to the channel and my friend was busy/in a game I alt-tabbed and started the taskmgr and services.msc to try and see what was slowing down my pc. Everything seemed mostly normal, at first glance, and I just wrote it off to some program updating randomly or w/e in the background.

So I decided I would try my 1 placement match game to finally get on the ladder (see introduction re:16 weeks not playing) on the 2v2 randoms. I ended up with "your computer is slowing down the game" message again, complaints from the players (totally understandable... nothing more annoying than lag) Despite good play and good effort, from us both I ended up with what seemed to be a frozen computer, and finally was disconnected from the game about 15 minutes into it. and got a gold placement due in part to the loss/disconnect

Okay... so "What The Forget?!?! (see: SNL Cee Lo Green skit haha!) I am playing on a Intel quadcore 3.0ghz computer with 8 gigs of ram, and a g force 9800 GTX-2 1 gig (a little dated graphics card i guess...) what on earth is going on that my computer is so freakin slow, even after i closed my stream and other apps?? I ran a quick speedtest.net and got this... [image loading]

After checking all my services, and processes, I decided to click the box that says "show processes from all users" (as i do not log in as administrator to help protect my pc) - 3rd down on the list (1st was SC2, second was svchost.exe) was "df64.exe" using 178,016 K of memory... and reading and writing from at almost the 3 Gbit/s capacity of my hard drive!!!

I started up task scheduler program and opened all the trees for the programs, and found what seems to be hundreds of scheduled tasks for all sorts of times during the day etc... So, I have now gone through nearly all of them and except for a few that are required for windows to operate properly, added the condition to all of them, that the computer must be idle for the process to start... I don't know how many other of you are windows vista/7 64bit users, but I suggest you look into your task scheduler and see what's in your future!!

df64.exe is defraggler (a defragmentation software from piriform)... guess it makes sense it was raping your hard drive (so I guess it wasn't even fake but a non compromised legit exe). Didn't know though they have it setting up schedules - you probably allowed it to do it.

Now, more interesting is the 2vchost.exe - which must be a virus. The real thing is always called svchost.exe (there might be several of them, which is fine). Unless that was a typo/read error from your side, you might want to format.

svchost is a host process for windows which encompasses a lot of different kids of Windows services (think networking, communication between devices, etc.)

You can turn some of them off, like themes, to speed up your system, but there will always be some running!

Ew, Internet Explorer. Change that and you're off to an improvement.
Also, sharing control if you're playing with a friend is always good. At least s/he'll be able to open the depots him/herself ^^
And seems like some1 above me already recognized the process as defraggler. You might want to check it's configuration. Playing while a defrag is going...well, I pity the HDD to say the least.

Other things that might be your problem:
1) Physical Problems: Are your fans clear? clear them out with compressed air. Are they all plugged in? plug them in, etc. Make sure there's room between your fan and the wall for unobstructed airflow.
2) Livestream Problems: Are you using Webcaster? consider using Procaster, which gives you better control over both your bitrate and the resource usage on your computer
3) Sc2 problems: Are you on Ultra? Maybe your resolution is too high? Consider turning this down.


It's also possible that there's malicious software on your computer. If you want a quick solution, and I'm very sure this will speed up your computer if it's a software problem:

NOTE: READ THE ENTIRE SERIES OF EVENTS BEFORE DOING THEM ALL

1) offload all your important documents, replays, saves, schoolwork, etc onto an external HD
2) reformat your HD, thereby erasing it-- and reinstall windows
3) install sc2 and the other programs you need, as well as your antivirus, office suite, etc.
4) you have now uninstalled all the unnecessary computer software you have. load your files and documents back onto your computer from your external hard drive.
this may take several hours, but will remove any useless software from your computer

On a side note - game fixed, streaming fixed - back to running the game smoothly with a great stream feed and resolution again - and I had a lot of fun playing some 1v1's with a new friend some great compliments from the viewers - really encouraging!

Still recommend - you check your task schedulers and see what's in YOUR future I disabled auto-updates with for quite a few programs (using the program) and also was able to put off certain tasks until between 1am and 6am when i'm usually not using the pc, with the requirement that the PC be idle - just in case
