Video gaming stimulates brain cells idea?

I have been researching on a science topic of how serotonin affects the brain and other parts of the body, and also how to stimulate the brain and how depression is caused. What I have gathered is that bright lights will stimulate the brain to produce more serotonin naturally. In an article I read, it also said that bright lights will also stimulate brain cells. With that in mind, video games have a lot of bright lights in them so wouldn't it make more sense that video games "stimulate the brain" instead of make your brain more lazy?

I don't think you can draw the connection between stimulate the brain to, not make the brain lazy. A lot of things stimulate the brain.

Alcohol stimulates the brain, marijuana stimulates the brain, narcotics stimulate the brain, there are a large amount of things that stimulate the brain, they don't all make your brain all of a sudden "not lazy".

marijuana is not a stimulant though, that and alcohol are depressants. They slow down brain function.

I have no problem with that statement. However, I have doubts of the profit of the stimulation as such. It keeps you awake and it might be better than doing nothing but it's not going to turn you into a genius if you stare into the monitor all day long and don't actually learn something viable - by studying/solving complex issues/remembering stuff. It might help you in dealing with similar problems in the real world, on the other hand you absorb a certain amount of knowledge that is useless there and the time would probably be better spent on the actual knowledge required.

To adress the question you asked more directly - yes it will make the brain work more than if you sit and stare into an empty wall. Although you might get overthrown by the amount of data the brain has to process and hence the headache or overall fatigue.

Yep, they act as inhibitory neurotransmitters. Yay for grade 12 bio!

Lifting weights stimulates muscle growth, but if I sit there doing curls with my right arm every day I wont become 'strong' ill just have a strong arm.

This is a rather crude analogy though as the brain is much more complicated than muscle, but for th sake of this context it will do.

Your brain reacts to lights, just as it reacts to movements etc, this is just the nature of things, but as far as I understand it (not a neuroscientist so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) the brain being stimulated in this fashion doesnt mean new pathways are being created.

Your brain will be creating new pathways when playing a video game though as you are required to think, problem solve and all that jazz which will be beneficial, and the bright lights of games may help to aid concentration and possibly even facilitate learning when engaged in a task in a game but as far as the lights actually being beneficial in any independent sense I would be surprised.

I dont think the brain can ever be 'lazy', that word just doesnt seem to fit in with my understanding of it however you can certainly stagnate or be used inefficiently, its been shown that games dont stagnate your brain, they are good for your problem solving skills but thats more to do with the nature of the game rather than the lights, otherwise TV would have the same effect, but really TV is a somewhat passive activity and could be argued that it does 'stagnate' your brain.
