Introduction to Starcraft (tell your mom)

I wrote this on another forum after finding what I feel like is the perfect video to help someone to understand What Is Starcraft in a userfriendly fashion.

What do you guys think? Do you know of any other great "introductory" videos that you might dare to show your mom or girlfriend?

[...] I'd like you to read this...

Starcraft is a strategy game. It is most commonly likened to chess.

Starcraft2 tournaments are being streamed every day of the week with English commentary. There are up to 40,000 live viewers during some final matches, with another 40,000 views per game on youtube (1).

An educational Starcraft show attracts 10,000 live viewers, 4 or 5 nights a week (2).

The GomTV tournament regularly awards its 1st-place winners with around $100,000 (every three months, I think). The new NorthAmericanSL has $400,000 prize pool for its announced three seasons. MLG's main event gives $50,000 to 1st place. Take a look at the calender to see a fuller, daily tournament line-up (3).

You all knew that Starcraft was big in Korea, but Starcraft2 has rapidly become dominated by the international scene. So maybe it's time to find out what's so interesting about it?

Amongst the many thousands of videos I've watched, I recently came across one that really screamed to me "This is the one that you should introduce people to Starcraft with!". It's an incredibly simple 30-minute commentary about a game where one player attacks another player with his army, fails the attack, and then loses.

You don't need to know ANYTHING about the game Starcraft to enjoy the video. It is a straight up, simple as can be, analysis of how strategy and efficiency are used to allow one gamer to beat another.

If you have 30 minutes to spend, I urge you to give it a go. Treat it like a documentary if you like - "Starcraft: Why is this game so popular!?"

Start the clip at around 2 minutes, and end it around 30 minutes. If you do watch it, let me know if it really was a good introduction to Starcraft, and if it had any eye-opening affect on you

no one is going to agree to sit down and listen to someone talk about their tournie wins and listen to random obscure usernames being thrown at them for 2 hours 100 was amazing, but if you rewatch it youll realise its only amazing if you can understand the complexity of listening to someone talk about the details of gaming tournaments. its okay for us because we can at least visualise 50 nerds sitting in a hall and know what "best of 3" or "round of 16" entails. to a non-tournie gamer its just blather

really liked this video. It could work for convincing ppl that the game is complex and for attracting ppl who are into strategy games.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

not really, you see people are used to tuning out a lot of what they are listening to anyway so they'd just gloss over that and relate to the emotional parts. thats simple psychology.

although your vid was good, its more of a 'just get them maybe a little more interested and more likely to search for more information on sc2' which would lead them to other, non-friendly sources of info anyway...

Well, bumping this thread because it seems better than starting a new one. I was also on the look-out for a good intro video, but for SC2 that'd easily explain units, general strategy and game concept. Anyone have any good ideas? Was considering some old Husky/Day9 videos from '10 but I'm not sure.
