The Royal Road will come to SC2 once OS2L(OGN Star 2 League) comes into the picture....but considering the current situation with OGN and Blizzard...It might be a while...

So is it because you think the concept is reserved for old BW enterprises, or is it because GSL is not perhaps big enough and your opinion might change once the 2011 season starts? After all current GSLs are more like MSTs.

they are like MSTs and they will probably have a wildcard tounament for the final S-class spot from GSL2 since it had only 7 people going into S-Class (ITR qualified twice to the Ro8).

i dont think that will be the case. there has been a chart released where top 32 players were ranked based on points (that are earned by reaching a roX)

There's no need for a wildcard tournament. There are only 24 spots available to S-class from people who qualified to it by getting to the Ro8, but there are 32 total spots for S-class designation. At least 8 slots were going to be decided by points anyways.

I think the idea of a Royal Roader is someone who enters the scene amongst tried-and-true players and takes the championship away from all of them. In the first couple GSLs, there are a LOT of first time GSL participants (of course), so I think the Royal Road concept really begins to take effect in GSL starting from the next one, in which the S-class will be seeded.

Yeah i'd say royal roader definitely applies to sc2... Infact i cant see a reason it wouldnt be, although i completely understand not calling fruitdealer a proper royal roader.

Everybody in sc2 are still rookies. This term may get its place after a few years.

All the purists will try to rip your head off if you try to say someone is royal roading the MSL. I don't even want to know what they'll do if you apply it to something else. :>

Like somone above me said I dont think its early enough to have royal roaders there are no real elite SC2 players.

Maybe GSL4 and after? After all the s-class a-class and stuff..

and even then that could be too soon. Maybe after HotS is released?
Have you ever heard the story, about the Zergling and the Probe? The Probe didn't make it across the creep.

Well we label Garimto and Boxer as Royal Roaders even when BW was still young at the time they won their OSL. So I think the key factor is success of the game as an esport. I wasn't around when the scene started, but my guess is that BW achieved prominent success and then somebody went and invented the term Royal Road, and went back and included all the previous first-time OSL winners as well, even though the competition was a lot less serious during that time.

The idea of walking the royal road wasn't something that was there when SC first started. It came after SC was well enough established that there was stability among the S-class and some stability to the league structure. I don't think that it was until July that the term was introduced and tbh, I first remember seeing it used in reference to Anytime. At that point, OSL had been going on for more than five years already and we had 3 bonjwas.

If after 3-4 years of GSL and your first SC2 bonjwa you want to talk about the royal road, that's a bit different. Right now it seems absurdly silly and totally premature.

no one refers to MSL winners as royal roaders. it's purely reserved for OSL, so until there's an OSL for sc2 there's no such thing as a royal roader in sc2.

Figure out another term, GSL isn't OSL.
If you have to ask, you don't know.

Yes and no. Royal roader was a total unknown demolishing all the pro's to win it all. Right now we don't really know who's "pro" and who's "unknown" so the title doesn't mean anything.

I pretty much agree with anyone who said that the title is for new player who shocks the established players. The game is too young to have solid established players.

No, Royal Roader is for OSL.

But now that I have ssen that it is applied to MSL too, it might be safe to assume that it has gotten a more general meaning. So sure, we can use it.

And to people who are talking about the scene not being esatablished so we shouldn't use it, was the scene established in 2000? Should we take away the Royal Roader title from Grrr...? Because OGN don't think so.
