How about a big story? That way, you probably won't read it. But at least I'm safe from creating a low content blog...

A couple weeks back, I finally won my first game on iCCup PvT and just an hour ago, I won my second game: PvP!

Not such a big deal for TL vets I know, but I only started playing SCBW in 07 and never for very much. (Previous iCCup seasons I'd play like 3 game losses and that's all.)

I learned a lot from the SCBW Strategy section (always lurked, never had to post as all my answers were there- or on liquidpedia when that got started.) Also got introduced to the proleagues through GOMTV and then tried to find older matches on Python and Destination. I could beat my friends 1v3, but iCCup was such a huge jump and I found it rather frustrating.

Then SC2 Beta came out and I played my brother and cousin a whole bunch and really enjoyed laddering because I could finally play people my own skill level. (Too good for my friends, but absolutely rubbish for iCCup.)In addition, I liked the ability to be more creative and develop my own precise timings rather than be lock-stepped into: PvZ, Protoss MUST fe.
Then one of the last patches came out in Beta, and my poor laptop couldn't handle it anymore. (Found out I bought one that overheats like crazy.)

Bought SC2, but worked even less: 0-1 fps after 3 minutes.
Dropped all my placement matches, got mad and uninstalled it.

So after a month, I began nosing back into iCCup. At first I found it very empty, but recently I've found times that people actually play.

You could stop reading now.

The rest is just game descriptions.

For posterity:

Title: First win ever PvT 25 min
http://repdepot.net/replay.php?id=39168
Description: Actually, it's less that I won and more that I didn't lose. He could have rolled me over multiple times or took out my vulnerable expansion. But I suspect because my dragoons were on his door step, he felt like he couldn't move out.

Title: Second win PvP 18 min
http://repdepot.net/replay.php?id=39169
Description: I had actually just played him before and lost to a dt rush, hence my fast observers. Essentially out-macroed him, but the early zealot pressure was kinda fun. (Threw away my early advantage quickly thereafter.)
I realize I haven't actually studied that much PvP matchups.

And to show this isn't just a brag post- here's some of my recent PvZ. The one that I've studied the most, had to play the most on iCCup, and still am completely uncomfortable with the fe. I have hard time remembering where the buildings go without having the picture in front of me. Also I seem to die from a dozen different things- hydra pushes, mutalisks in my back.

These last 2 were against won player who was gracious enough to regame me a few times. My bo is rather rusty as I haven't played in while.

Title: PvZ gas steal 6 min
http://repdepot.net/replay.php?id=39170
Description: Apparently, my assimilator was late... Building placement off. One good thing- I finally scouted what the zerg was doing. Hatch before pool. Most times, my scout finds zerg on the last base and I've already had to commit to cannons before Nexus.

Title: PvZ lose to muta ling 6 min
http://repdepot.net/replay.php?id=39171
Description: Scouted pool before hatch, so pulled probes. But got run over by muta later.

As you can see, the concept of PvZ fe is really evading me. One day...

Why are you still reading this???

You don't need to keep shooing us away from your blog, I for one still like reading people's adventures on the ol' iCCup ladder.

Congrats on your wins! I hope you eventually get a decent computer for sc2 so your $60 doesn't go to waste. :/

when you start getting better and you know it, iccup will become a lot more fun.

even when you lose. keep playing and enjoy!

and yeah.. pvz is probably the hardest match up to play as a toss. don't be discouraged. i'd suggest watching any progamer pvz vods if you want to get the basics down.. don't try to emulate bisu or something because that's hard;; instead get the basics down!

good luck & have fun~

Not really, 2 gate play and 1 gate tech play are viable choices on most maps ;l but forge FE isn't really had at all, just learn 4 gate 2 archon and practice it so you have the build down to a science, and then try other builds like 2 gate speedlot (most popular PvZ build atm)

Congratulations on the wins!

I've never really attempted to play on iCCup because while my knowledge of the game/build orders is fine (I watch a lot of proleague and such), my mechanics and basic micro/macro fundamentals are awful so I can't take my game to where my mind wants it to be. Makes me wish there was a version of SC1 with things like auto-mining workers, multiple building selection, and the ability to selection more then 12 units, as I love SC1 > SC2 but the amount of micro required to play at an iCCup level is beyond my abilities.

Oh, I forgot to add in that I had watched proleague vod's- particularly on the maps and matchups I've been doing. However, I don't think I've done any since the GOMTV Season 3, so it might be time to hunt through the archives again.

@Arvick That's good to know that fe is the only way on PvZ.
I probably should try 4 gate 2 archon based on my current speed. I was trying for some form of corsair templar builds, but as my games are between 65-80 apm, that might be too difficult for my current speed.

Course those last two games I died before I could reasonably get 4 gate 2 archon. I just need to bite the bullet and play more often. It's mostly an uncomfortably of defending with little to know troops till the eco kicks in.

Having won twice does provide more incentive to play even if I lose the next 10 or so games

Yeah, when I learned starcraft, I quickly figured out the 2 gate rush on my own. But reading through the strategy sections a couple year back, I switched. I don't think I've tried to learn any particular cheese. That was the one thing that carried me through in SC2- I didn't know how to control my units properly and what compositions to make, but I expanded, built lots of stuff, scouted their expansions and shut them down.

In iCCup it's much harder because most everyone is good at holding on to expansions. But I'm glad to have won straight up. Obviously a LOT of holes in my play, but fun to play.

This is awesome! Iccup rules!

I enjoy seeing more enthusiasm out of blogs where people win 2 games then blogs where people become ranked #1 diamond...wonder which is more of an accomplishment but both are so exciting!

These blogs of people getting into ICCup for the first time are always one of my favorite ones.

I had something to say, but I don't want to derail your accomplishments into an accidental BW vs SC2 flamewar.

So I'm just gonna say, 5/5. Very constructive blog!

I had so much fun on ICCup back in the day when the TL channel was active. I only played there for a few weeks, but I improved a lot.

Otherwise, just the odd pickup game. ICCup is just completely ferocious, lol.

PvZ basically comes to you with mass gaming (we zergs have it easy :3 triple expand if toss FEs, keep corsair count down, sim city, mass hydras, 1a2a3a4a5h6h7h8h9h :DD)

you'll get the timings, how to poke through poorly constructed sim cities (or lack of), etc. and stuff like that when you play more

you often don't need a PERFECT wall in for FEs, just make sure lings only have one way through and that you can seal off your wall against any ling all ins with zealots and probes

if you want, i can help you in PvZ (i played both at a fairly consistent d level) yeah im pretty terrible but better than nothing :3

good luck on your iccup endeavors :D i remember i went 7-62 for my first month because i didn't know what BOs were... micro ftw =s

edit - poorly constructed sentences

i love threads like these. i have a lot of friends with a passing interest in SC- ie we play with each other sometimes- but it's damn near impossible to get them into the iccup scene and even more so now that SC2 is out. The biggest problem of course is that no one wants to go 0-50 before winning their first game. It sounds like you've got a good attitude though and it's always nice to see some real tangible improvement in yourself. keep it up!

lol. Ok, so I just won my first PvZ.
So now I'm really balanced with my wins. One of each.

But really, no improvement on my part. Just a not so good opponent, although they did trick me with a canceled hatch into lurker rush. (Lost my initial forge and gateway and forced to pull probes off the expansion.)

But ending the game with 70 probes vs 25 drones makes a bit of difference...

I then promptly lost PvP to the second goon push (and a reaver in my base.)
