It's Estonian music time again! Even though there are tons of choral versions of this song, I thought the original singer brings out the emotion much better.
Except for Arvo Pärt, Estonian classical composers are fairly unknown, but this does not mean we are lacking talent. Tüür has his own style, and his own followers.
Classical music not your thing? Let's try the exact opposite then. Horricane has had a lot of acclaim for their Death Doom Industrial Metal fusion album The Lynch Lawyers. The albums subject matter is rather weird for Death metal - a Kafka-esque legal system which is run by actual demons. Give it a listen if you are into that sort of thing.
If that was too heavy for you, let's turn it a notch down. If you've listened to the GSL1 music, an Estonian band called Vanilla Ninja is featured there, and their front-woman has done a few songs of her own. This particular piece is off a movie soundtrack. (Avoid the movie if you value your intelligence.)
These guys are the closest to mainstream "hipster" music we have. Explains why I haven't heard of them for quite a while.
Urmas Alender is quite possibly the most iconic Estonian voice. This song is probably his best known, which speaks about drowning. Ironically, he drowned himself on the MS Estonia in 1994 in one of the largest national tragedies since Estonia became independent from the Soviet Union.
Any other ideas? What could I use as an easter-egg? I'm all ears.
