Ok so I got my beta key the other day and I've been playing some 1v1 matches. Why am I so bad?
In SC1 I am a D+ Terran player. From what I was reading this equates to Gold or even Platinum in the SC2 beta. Yet I find I am struggling in the bronze section.
Couple of thoughts:
-I'm having trouble with the pace of SC2, it feels like things happen at different times and it's throwing me off, e.g. building units at the wrong time.
-If the game lasts more than 10 mins I always win cos of my much better macro(why does noone expand in this game??!)
-Clearly my macro isn't very good since I often lose at the start.

Play zerg. 1 base roach every game. If you were legit D+ in SC1, you'll get to platinum in no time.

Eh? SC2 is so much easier than SC1. I was a D+ terran in BW, but after i actually started playing, I went to platinum in less than 3 days.
Are you making marauders at all?

You're losing at the "start"? Try defending against cheese, or scouting more. I'm guessing a big reason you're D+ is because you don't scout enough. IMO SC2 is a game where there's no "standard safe opening" yet cuz you need to react to what your opponent is doing. Either scout more or learn some cheese builds...

I was a C macro player, I found the transition to starcraft 2 incredibly easy. In BW, i never relied on strategy to win, more so I got into heavy expansion war gameplay with high APM with good mutlitasking and harassment. starcraft 2 sooo easy. Perhaps take your D+ game knowledge, and try more economic type defensive builds. Stop rushes with a stronger economy, then switch to a macro heavy build and just win.

SC2 is incredibly easy compared to BW, i was a pathetic player in BW, even with toss, yet i could maintain plat in sc2 easily with any race, even if it was lowish (< 30) rank

Everyones gona come in here with "lol, just do *x strat people do against me that pisses me off*, plat in no time". Don't listen to them, keep experimenting, play solid, and once you do learn how to hold yourself into the mid-game, your mechanics (even if they were lousy by broodwars standards) will crush any gold and below player very easily

Sc2 is easy. But like in bw you have to pick Protoss to feel really gosu.

oh fe....yea don't do that unless you're zerg and even then its kinda risky especially at the lower levels because of all the cheeses

D+ is equivalent to high plat. Definitely not gold. I was a D+ protoss and I got up to 1700 rating with a good w/l. I'm also terran, so I don't get what would be different for you. I found it pretty easy to learn all the new timings and builds, ect.
And dude, SC1 does have an AMM server now.

For being a typographical error it's a pretty derrible one

Don't worry about your mechanics. If you held D+ solidly late into multiple seasons, your mechanics should be more than enough to sustain platinum in SC2. If timing is throwing you off you probably just need to streamline your build. Try to understand why builds you did in BW were optimal and then try to understand why the builds you're doing right now are failing you. Lacking that, you can try to copy builds of top players' replays, but you'll lose out on a lot of learning that could probably benefit you seeing as you're not even in platinum yet.
You could also post a replay of yourself and hope some gracious soul analyzes it for you, though optimally you should be able to do this yourself.
Also is whinge commonly used where you live?

I hear you on the macro thing. I'm having basically the same experience -- if it goes to a long macro game I win by keeping my money down better, but not many of my games are getting that far. Most people seem more interested in massing units that counter mine off one base, so I'm losing a lot because I know very little about the early/midgame counters.
The suggestions that I can give you for Terran: make lots of marauders, research concussive shells ASAP (and +1 and stim when you can afford them), and don't expand until you know you can defend it. A lot of my losses have come from expanding too early (bad habit from playing Z in BW) and being unable to hold the expansion against a one base push.

Thanks for all the advice. I kinda know all this (watching reps, learning BO's etc) - I was just surprised at how bad I am starting beta yesterday not knowing anything about SC2 but having decent skills at SC1.

Tarpman that sounds like me exactly. I don't yet know which units counter what. Like apparently marines don't counter mutas (lol?) 'vikings' do (guy who owned me kindly told me haha).
And dude, SC1 does have an AMM server now.
