Everyone on TL has heard Kpop. However, most avoid it like the plague. (Gee gee gee gee baby baby baby anyone?) I'm here to fix your misconceptions about Kpop. Believe it or not, there is more to Kpop than a bunch of teenagers dancing around as they lipsync to their autotuned voices!

I'm going to try and periodically upload a few songs for people to download. These songs aren't going to be from a particular genre or artist. Some songs will be ballad, some will be boyband/girlgroup, others will be rock, hiphop, etc. I'll also try and provide a brief bio on the artists (thanks last.fm and wikipedia!).

Let me know what you think of the music.

1. H.O.T. - 환희 (Hwanhee) It's been raining since you left me from their 4th album.

"H.O.T. (“High Five of Teenagers”), formed by SM Entertainment, was one of the most popular K-pop groups of the late nineties. It consisted of five members, all of whom knew how to play various instruments. Produced by Lee Soo Man, their style of music was usually a mixture of rap and ballads, with Kangta providing most of the vocals to the ballads. The magnitude of their fanbase was so immense that they became the the first K-pop group to hold a concert in the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

The members of H.O.T. were very talented songwriters — on their 3rd album “Resurrection”, they wrote most of their own songs. By the time they released their final two albums — “I yah!” and “Outside Castle” — they had become masters of both songwriting and composition. Their 5th album was entirely written and self-produced by the members. In addition, they were also talented dancers, with members Moon Hee Jun and Jang Woo Hyuk choreographing all of their songs."

2. Yoon Do Hyun Band - 박하사탕 (Peppermint Candy)

Yoon Do Hyun Band, also called Yoonband or YB, is one of the most famous rock bands in South Korea. They debuted in 1994 but they finally gained huge popularity during the 2002 World Cup with their songs Oh Pilseung Korea and a rock rendition of the traditional Arirang. They have sold over 2 million albums and have toured in various cities around the world.

3. LeeSsang - Ballerino feat. ALI

This group is origin of the nickname for Flash/Jaedong comes from.

"Leessang is a 2-member rap band made up of Gary and Gill, ex-member of Honey Family. Avoiding the strong and aggressive style, Leessang pursues a relaxing and flexible rap in which the rhythms are alive. Humor and wit, and the utilization of a retrospective sound are the strong point of the rap duo. The duo first was created in 2002. In 1999, the members of the duo joined a hip-hop crew called Honey Family. Gary and Gill participated in the production of two albums with Honey Family, “A Man’s Story” and “Another Level.” The two rappers showed off a unique style of melodic rap with the band. When there was a lull in Honey Family’s performing activities, Gary and Gill separated from the band to start performing as a duo. Under the name of Leessang, the two rappers released their first album in 2002. Accompanied by some top figures of the local pop music scene Leessang displayed a fantastic harmony of rapping in their first album. Almost all the words of Leessang’s rap were written in Korean showing the essences of a so-called ‘indigenous hip-hop.’ Acknowledged for their talents in hip-hop music, Leessang was invited by Seo Taiji to the ‘2002 ETPFEST.’"

4. Nell - 기억을 걷는 시간

"Nell is a band with an appealing power to music lovers with their unique sound and color accompanied with deep lyrics.First formed in 1999, the rock band re-named itself “Nell” after the title of a movie in which Jodi Foster starred.

Mainly performing in the clubs around the Shinchon area, Nell released two albums in the Indie music scene. The turning point for Nell’s musical career was after the band participated in the rock festival designed by Seo Taiji, the 2002 ETPFEST and joined the Goesoo Indigene Label. The Goesoo Indigene Label was established by Seo Taiji in order to stir up a change in the local pop music scene dominated by a few genres of music. After preparing for more than a year with Goesoo Indigene, Nell released their major debut album “Let It Rain” in June of 2003. The album was evaluated to display great sound along with beautiful lyricism that deliver a clear color of sorrow."

I agree, there's more to it than the girl and boy groups...

I've come to fall in love with Hot Potato (Kim C's band, i'm just confused if they are a 2 piece band because on some of their lives, there's like 4 of them) they are really underrated and i hope they would come up with an album soon. They are an alternative korean band actually

That said, here's some of their songs

Korea has a huge indie scene that no one seems to know about.
I honestly think that South Korea has the most talented musicians in the world, from Hip Hop (Epik High are freaking geniuses) to amazing Rock (ex Monni). It's a shame that massproduced Kpop gets so much exposure in the media and even on the internet when the real musical geniuses sit in the shadows.

There are some great sites dedicated to korean indie, Indieful ROK being one of them.

As MrHoon says, need DEM LEGZZZZZZ

But seriously, I really enjoy Nell. The style and the singing is something that's lacking from today's mainstream scene. And as KT's coach would agree on, it's HOT Forever.
