Perfect present

Man, I wish I could think of a perfect present to get my roommate and his girlfriend --- because they just got me the perfect gift:

Communique, the only Dire Straits album I didn't yet own. DS is my favorite band by far and I immediately fell in love with "Once Upon a Time in the West", "News", "Where Do You Think You're Going?", "Lady Writer", "Single-Handed Sailor", and "Follow Me Home" (which I'm listening to now).

I wish I could think of what to get them in return... Obviously I've thanked them already, and I know that gifts between friends don't need to be returned, but I'd like them to have the same feeling of being given something really lasting and special. If only I could think of something that they will appreciate even half as much as I appreciate this... Hmmm.

I don't usually give many presents, so I'm kind of at a loss. If you guys have any ideas, or remember times when you've given or received the "perfect gift", maybe that would help jog my imagination. (I'm not expecting you guys to know what my friends want, I'm just looking for inspiration!)

My advice is just to wait until an obvious gift idea rolls along (and believe me it will, if you pay attention to what your roomie/gf talk about). The best gifts are products of some idle conversation where you mention something that you want or some interest that you have—the album you got is a perfect example. You can't create one of these gift ideas, but instead have to wait for them to pop up. So just keep in mind that you owe them a present and eventually you'll find out what it should be.

Prolly a big hamper of food & tidbits or something like that. At least until their next special occasion(wedding? engagement?) to which you'll buy them something special instead.

Alright, but more seriously, often people will just mention things that they really want or could be useful in their lives, but they don't have/can't afford. Pay close attention to conversations for these type of signatures. But getting something that is involved in their interests/hobbies is always a good idea (a la your gift from them). That's always a solid choice.
